Sand surfing – Stockton Beach – The newest form of surfing is about the highest dunes not the biggest waves

The area that now includes Stockton Beach was once home of the Worimi Aboriginal Tribe. In later years the beach became a common site for shipwrecks and in World War Two fortifications were laid on to fend off possible attacks by sea from the Japanese. Today it is popular with tourists visiting nearby areas like Port Stevens and Nelson Bay Resorts have mushroomed in recent times, to cater to lovers of everything the surf, sun and sand.

There is much to see and do for visitors: climb to the top of Tomaree Head and feast your eyes of the stunning vistas, take a few swings at the local golf course, get into some fun and games at Toboggan Hill Park and ride the dunes of Stockton Beach. Start your adventure vacation by getting settled in a convenient location like the Oaks Lure, which is moments away from all the major attractions.

Head down to Stockton beach to experience something truly spectacular. The beach which stretches thirty two kilometres from Stockton to Anna Bay, has the largest continuously moving sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere. The dunes are over thirty metres high and year by year the dunes move north by approximately four meters. Several companies have created sand surfing packages which come with four wheel drive vehicles that will take you down to the beach and once there, instructors are on hand to coach you. Enjoy the thrills and spills of sitting on a board and whizzing down the sandy slopes at dizzying speeds. There is little shade out on the dunes so take along plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat. Some companies even arrange private tours with a minimum number, so if you are vacationing with a large family or group friends, this may be a fun way to spend a few hours.
