Etthingili Alifushi, Maalhosmadulu Uthuruburi, Rasdhu, Thoddu and Nilandhe Atholhu Uthuruburi are some of the twenty six atolls that form the Republic of Maldives. Arranged in a long and narrow pattern, the Atolls are home to over one thousand islands of which around one hundred house iconic resorts. Ari Atoll enjoys the distinction of being home to around twenty such resorts including the luxurious W Retreat & Spa Maldives. The Atoll itself has been divided into two sections for administrative purposes and is easily accessible from the capital by seaplane.
Things to do in Maldives are limitless: given its gorgeous natural beauty and clear waters, it provides tourists with excellent places for diving to witness the splendour of the marine world in all its glory. While other atolls are better equipped to provide excellent diving experiences for those who wish to flit in and out of thriving coral reefs, Ari Atoll has a special attraction for those who dare to swim alongside uncommon marine species.
It would, therefore, come as no surprise that Ari Atoll is beloved haunt of Hammerhead Sharks, Manta Rays, Grey Reef Sharks, Batfish and Fusiliers. In the hopes of sighting Manta Rays, tourists make their way to diving areas such as Donkalo Thila, Kudarah Thila and Rangali Madivaru which are all sites located in Ari Atoll.
Similarly, to witness the slightly terrifying glory of Hammerhead Sharks, the Hammerhead Point located to the north east of the Atoll would not disappoint while towards the north west of Ari Atoll, one may have the good fortune of encountering the majestic Whale Shark as well.
Therefore, diving in the Ari Atoll is not for everyone. It does not allow divers with the lazy luxury of floating along and enjoying the conventional beauty of the ocean but challenges them to experience new and often, intimidating sights. It is an experience that, once had, is scarcely forgotten.
